Stuart Kale is internationally recognised as one of the most outstanding singing actors in the operatic world. He maintains a highly successful relationship with English National Opera for whom he sings Valzacchi, Monostatos, Altoum and Rector Adams in their acclaimed production of Peter Grimes.

Highlights of engagements for the coming period include VALZACCHI Der Rosenkavalier, MONOSTATOS Magic Flute and RECTOR ADAMS Peter Grimes for ENO, as well as and ALONSO Thomas Adès’ Tempest for VARA Zaterdag Matinee.
He began his career at Welsh National Opera before joining English National Opera, where he remained for eight years, singing roles such as DON OTTAVIO Don Giovanni, MICHAEL in Martinu’s Julietta, ALFRED Die Fledermaus and NANKI-POO in Jonathan Miller’s production of The Mikado. Notable engagements since include the HIGH PRIEST in the new Johannes Schaaf production of Idomeneo at Covent Garden, HAUPTMANN for San Francisco, Canadian Opera Company, Geneva, Zürich, Montpellier, Bordeaux and Bologna, SHUISKY Boris Godunov in Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Montpellier (also for Chandos Records), QUINT The Turn of the Screw for ENO’s Russian Tour in the summer of 1990, TRUFFALDINO The Love for Three Oranges for ENO, ZINOVIEV Lady Macbeth in Toulouse and Marseille, IDOME¬NEO in Drottningholm and the 3 tenor roles in LULU at the Châtelet, AEGHISTE in Karlsruhe, L’Occa¬sione fa il Ladro at the Schwetzingen Festival and Köln, BOB BOLES for EMI and at the Munich State Opera, Covent Garden, Genova and Strasbourg, a recording of Susannah (Floyd) with Ramey, Hadley, Hendricks, VALZACCHI at the Châtelet, CAPTAIN VERE Billy Budd in Köln, ALFRED in Strasbourg, Johnny Spielt Auf with Radio France and most recently acclaimed assumptions of GREGOR Makropoulos Case and HEROD both in new productions in Strasbourg.
Other international appearances have included HAUPTMANN Wozzeck at the Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg, GUILLOT Manon at Covent Garden, LUCANO L’Incoronazione di Poppea at the Châtelet Paris, TAMBOURMAJOR Wozzeck in Turin, HAUPTMANN in Parma and ZINOVIEV Lady Macbeth in Nancy, and a return to WNO to sing DR SUDA Osud, which was recorded by EMI.
He sang LEPREUX in St Francois d’Assise in Amsterdam, AUMONIER Dialogues des Carmelites in Cagliari and REVEREND ADAMS Peter Grimes at La Scala, Milan, in addition to HAUPTMANN in Zürich (under Christoph von Dohnanyi) and DR CAIUS for ENO, which role he also recorded for Chandos, together with GORO Butterfly (both in English).
He returned to Opera North to sing PIRELLI Sweeney Todd, HAUPTMANN with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under Charles Dutoit, BOB BOLES Peter Grimes at the New Israeli Opera, and returned to the Royal Opera House in the roles of SCHOOLMASTER/MOSQUITO in The Cunning Little Vixen conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. He then sang CURZIO in a recording of The Marriage of Figaro for Chandos, DR CAIUS in two recorded concerts with the Halle Orchestra, the roles of BARCLAY DE TOLLY & KARATAEV War and Peace with ENO and recently SHUISKY Boris at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Last year he sang SCHOOLMASTER Cherevichki for Garsington Opera and AEGISTHE Elektra with Opera di Roma. Earlier this year he sang HAUPTMANN with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Daniel Harding in Turin, AEGISTHE with Opera de Nantes, SCHOOLMASTER Cunning little Vixen in Geneva, DISTILLER May Night at Garsington Opera and JUSTICE SHALLOW Sir John in Love & DON BASILIO The Marriage of Figaro for ENO and DR CAIUS Falstaff and NILSKY & RASH GAMBLER The Gambler at Grange Park.
A master of versatility, he recently enjoyed huge success as the guest artist on Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's 2008 Christmas Special 'Shooting Stars.'
