Austrian bass Manfred Hemm studied at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna and passed his final examination with distinction in 1984. His début was the same year; FIGARO in Le Nozze di Figaro in Klagenfurt and he then accepted fest contracts in Augsburg and later in Graz, where he received acclaim for his portrayal of LEPORELLO. He was subsequently invited to become a member of the Vienna Staatsoper where he remained until 1991.

Manfred has worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Armin Jordan, Sir Colin Davies, Horst Stein, Sir Georg Solti and Herbert von Karajan in most of the major European and US opera houses. His début at the Metropolitan Opera New York was as PAPAGENO in a new production of Die Zauberflöte conducted by James Levine and he has received acclaim for this role as far afield as Tokyo and Buenos Aires. He made a successful début at the Salzburg Festival as FIGARO Le Nozze di Figaro and the following year was invited by Herbert von Karajan to sing at the Easter Festival in Salzburg. He has also sung at the festivals of Bayreuth, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, Vienna, Prague and the Maggio Musicale Florence.

Mr Hemm has given concert performances in many major European concert halls as well as in Japan and Australia. In 1993 he made his début at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich in the role of GUGLIELMO and in the following season made his début as DON GIOVANNI at the Philadelphia Opera Company, where he was invited back to sing GIORGIO I Puritani. Further roles at the Bayerische Staatsoper have included LEPORELLO, BASILIO Il Barbiere di Siviglia and ENRICO VIII in Donizetti's Anna Bolena. Manfred has performed TALBOT Maria Stuarda at the Opéra de Monte Carlo, FIGARO Le nozze di Figaro for the Munich Opera Festival, MASETTO at the Metropolitan Opera New York, CUNO Der Freischütz at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in Paris at the Salle Pleyel and at La Scala, Milan and LEPORELLO at the Opernhaus Zürich.

Recent and future appearances include KECAL in The Bartered Bride for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and at the Komische Oper Berlin, ENRICO VIII for the Finnish National Opera and Pittsburgh Opera, GURNEMANZ for Scottish Opera, South Australian Opera and the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, BARON OCHS for Scottish Opera and Den Norske Opera, LEPORELLO in Munich and Hamburg, OSMIN for the New Israeli Opera and the Teatro Regio Torino, SARASTRO at the San Francisco Opera, RAMFIS for Scottish Opera, JOV in Dvořák’s Dimitrij at the BBC Proms and ROCCO (Leonore) under Marc Minkowski at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées where he also sang SARASTRO. Future engagements include TRUELOVE Rakes Progress at the Theater an der Wien, EREMIT at the Festspielhaus Bregenz and BARON OCHS for the Opera de Marseille.
