Jyrki Korhonen Bass

One of the most exciting of the younger generation of basses, Jyrki Korhonen's debuts this season make impressive reading; Gurnemanz for the Finnish National Opera, Hunding for the Cincinnati May Festival, Hagen for the New National Theatre Tokyo and Sarastro for the Wiener Staatsoper.

Jyrki Korhonen was born in Finland and studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Jorma Elorinne and Tom Krause. He completed his vocal studies at the opera studio of the Zürich Opera, where he performed roles such as COLLATINUS/The Rape of Lucretia, FLEMISH DEPUTY/Don Carlos and NIKOLAI/Fedora.

Since 1994 Mr Korhonen has been a regular guest at the Finnish National Opera where his appearances have included BARTOLO/Le nozze di Figaro, COLLINE/La boheme and FAFNER/Der Ring des Nibelungen. In 1994 he appeared at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as GREMIN/Eugene Onegin and returned the following season as BANQUO/Macbeth.

Under fest contract at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Mr Korhonen added many new roles to his repertoire; MARQUESE DI CALATRAVA (also Royal Danish Opera) and PADRE GUARDIANO/La forza del destino, SCHLEMIL/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, DON ALFONSO/Così fan tutte and LORD SYNDHAM/Zar und Zimmermann.

He subsequently took up a fest contract at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, where his roles have included ERSTE HANDWERKSBURSCHE/Wozzeck, OBERLIN/Jakob Lenz) OSMIN/Die Entführung aus dem Serail, LORD PLUNKETT/Martha, RAIMONDO/Lucia di Lammermoor, SARASTRO and LANDGRAF/Tannhäuser.

Guest appearances have included the role of OBERLIN/Jakob Lenz at the Biennale München and with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and debuts at both the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (Die Feen) and the Bayreuth Festival where he sang the role of HANS FOLTZ/Die Meistersinger. He has recorded the Oratorio Vigilia by Rautavaara.

Recent engagements include TRUFFALDINO Ariadne auf Naxos with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven IX (Milano) and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony both with Mo Chailly, FAFNER/Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Finnish National Opera, in Las Palmas and for the Teatro Real Madrid COLLINE at both the Finnish National Opera and the Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen, HOBSON/Peter Grimes at the Grand Théâtre de Tours and ROCCO in Pisa, Como, Livorno and Rovigo.

He returns to the Bayreuther Festspiele for Die Meistersinger , for Lohengrin and for a major role in the new Ring cycle in 2006 as well as making prestigious debuts as HAGEN for the New National Theatre Tokyo, GURNEMANZ at the Finnish National Opera , as HUNDING for the Cincinnati Festival and the Opera de Rouen and as SARASTRO for the Wiener Staatsoper.
