Michael Bennett Tenor

With innate and intuitive perception, as well as a shrewd and careful choice of repertoire, Michael Bennett has defined himself as one of the most intelligent tenors of his generation. Most recently he appeared as Remendado in Carmen for Opera Leipzig, and revives his role in Alex Brücker Langer for Bolzano, as well as Goro Madama Butterfly for the Deutsch Oper Berlin in 2009 - 2010.

Highlights of his current and most recent schedule has included MALE CHORUS in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia for Grand Théâtre de Tours, the SPIRIT and 2nd Witch in Sasha Waltz’s production of Dido and Aeneas at the Staatsoper Berlin (where he has also just appeared as GORO in Madama Butterfly), the world premiere of ARLECCHINO in Signor Goldoni by Luca Mosca at Teatro La Fenice, Venice, and the TENOR in Philip Glass’s Hydrogen Jukebox for Opéra de Nantes. Future engagements include Dido and Aeneas in Lyon, and Hydrogen Jukebox for Opéra de Nantes in 2009 – 2010. In addition Michael embarks on a series of recital and concert tours featuring music by Dodgeson, Britten, Seiber and the Japanese composer Minoru Miki.

Educated at Durham University and The Royal Northern College of Music, he first came to public attention as the MADWOMAN in Yoshi Oida's production of Britten's Curlew River for Aix-en-Provence, which was filmed by ARTE, and in which he starred in 2007 in the New York revival. He later returned to Aix en Provence as both MERCURIO and FIRST SOLDIER in L'incoronazione di Poppea, conducted by Marc Minkowski, repeating this success in Vienna and the Cité de la Musique, Paris. In 2007 he renewed his close association with Aix as DON CURZIO in Le Nozze di Figaro, conducted by Daniel Harding.

Renowned for his unique ability in the world of Contemporary Music he has worked closely with composers Marc Monnet and Param Vir, ensembles including Ensemble Modèrne and Ensemble Psappha, and directors including Pascal Rambert at venues including La Monnaie, Bruxelles, Strasbourg Musica Festival, Y Arts Centre, New York. Opéra National de Rhin, Strasbourg, Berlin Festwochen and the iconic Centre Dramatique National de Création Contemporaine in Paris.

Other notable performances have included PETER QUINT in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw for Opera en Ile de France in Paris, RECTOR ADAMS in Peter Grimes and DR CAIUS in Falstaff for Opéra de Nancy, LE PECHEUR in Stravinsky's Le Rossignol for Opéra de Rouen, and numerous guest appearances for the Garsington Festival, Klagenfurt Opera, BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, Dutch Radio, Nord Deutsche Rundfunk, and Radio France Musique.
