James McOran-Campbell is acknowledged by colleagues, critics and public alike as both a remarkable operatic talent, and a popular and accomplished recital artist.
Born in London, he began his training in Milan, before attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, in addition to making early professional appearances as MALATESTA Don Pasquale, ACHILLAS Julius Caesar, ARGANTE Rinaldo, PROTEO/MARTE Il Parnasso in festa and MARCO Gianni Schicchi, which he performed at St John's Smith Square. Going on to study at the National Opera Studio, he came to the attention of a wider public as BELCORE in L'Elisir d'amore for Grange Park Opera Young Artists, FIGARO Il Barbiere di Siviglia for Grange Park Opera, and his debut at Opera North in the title role of Don Giovanni. He has since returned to Opera North on several occasions, as ALMAVIVA The Marriage of Figaro and PASTORE/SPIRITO in Orfeo.
Further highlights have included DANDINI La Cenerentola for Welsh National Opera, BELLO La Fanciulla del West (directed by Stephen Medcalf), GAMEKEEPER and FORESTER Rusalka for Grange Park Opera, MARCELLO in Garden Opera’s La Bohème, as well as covering the role of the ENGLISH CLERK in Deborah Warner’s production of Death in Venice for English National Opera.
More recently, he appeared in the title-role in Hamlet for English Pocket Opera, created the role of ORMUS CAMA in the world première of Victoria Borisova-Ollas’ The Ground beneath her Feet, with the Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Mark Elder at the Manchester International Festival, and understudied PELLÉAS Pelléas et Mélisande for Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells.
Already an experienced concert artist, significant performances have included Mozart’s Requiem at the Royal Albert Hall, and concerts at venues such as Symphony Hall in Birmingham and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester for Raymond Gubbay. Conductors he has worked with include Richard Hickox, Carlo Rizzi and Sir David Willcocks.
His European concert engagements have included Rossini's Messe in Milan and Savona with the Complesso Cameristico Internazionale and in London with the Philharmonia Chorus, in addition to a televised concert of Zarzuela in Spain.
Much in demand as a recital performer with accompanists including Mark Packwood and Iain Burnside, James’ recent appearances have included music by Gurney, and the world-première Tarik O’Regan’s Three Andre Motion Songs at King’s Place, London, and recitals for the Schubert Society and the Housman Society. He is also co-founder of the independent opera company Opera Galleria.
