Alexandru Badea Tenor

Alexandru Badea continues his successful come-back, demonstrated by the remarkable audio excerpt here from a special concert performance as Calaf Turandot in Japan in August 2009. While his many fans may not be accustomed to hearing him sing this particular repertoire, it is an emphatic testimony to the fact that Alexandru Badea has returned to the operatic arena.

Born in Rumania, Alexandru Badea made his operatic debut at the Landestheater Salzburg as NEMORINO L’Elisir d‘Amore before moving to Germany, where roles included, PERCY Anna Bolena at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and DUCA Rigoletto at the Opera House in Dortmund. Soon after the tenor was invited to the Volksoper in Vienna to sing his first FAUST conducted by Asher Fisch, who later invited Badea for the world première of the opus „Journey to the end of Millenium“ at the New Israeli Opera.

His 1997 debut at the Festival Martina Franca as EDGARDO Lucia di Lammermoor, conducted by Maurizio Benini (alongside Patrizia Ciofi as Lucia) succeded in bringing him to the attention of a wider public, and was quickly followed by ROMÉO Roméo et Juliette at Teatro Regio Torino, and ORPHÉE Orphée aux Enfers in 1998 (available on DVD) at Théatre de la Monnaie, the first of a series of collaborations with director Herbert Wernicke. Other successful appearances in this period included HOFFMANN Les Contes d'Hoffmann in Athens, and PÂRIS La belle Hélène (again directed by Wernicke) for Aix en Provence in 1999, and at the Salzburger Festspiele 2000.

Following an invitation by Plácido Domingo in 1999, Alexandru Badea’s universally-acknowledged success as ARTURO in I Puritani for the Washington Opera suddenly thrust him into the international spotlight, and generated many prestigious engagements, including HOFFMANN Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, directed by Olivier Py, the title-role in Faust at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, RODOLFO La Bohème at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, ARTURO at Teatro Verdi Trieste, DON CARLOS at the Festival Schwerin, ALFREDO La Traviata at the Theater Basel as well as DUCA Rigoletto at the Royal Opera Stockholm.

Following this period of great success and unrelenting workload, Badea withdrew from the stage and embarked on a short sabbatical, returning in the Season 2007/2008 for performances as DUCA, HOFFMANN, and POLLIONE Norma in Germany (Regensburg and Operafestival Chiemgau).

Once again a substantial international career appears imminent for this exceptional tenor, with engagements so far confirmed including the role of EDGARDO Lucia di Lammermoor in Metz in 2010.
