A powerful vocal mastery and uncanny flair for dramatic insight have confirmed Carole Wilson as one of Britain’s most successful operatic artists. Future engagements include ANNINA Rosenkavalier conducted by Sir Simon Rattle at the De Nederlandse Opera, 3te MAGD Elektra and CLOTHILDE Norma, both for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in 2010, in addition to the role of MRS SEDLEY Peter Grimes for De Vlaamse Opera and PREZIOSILLA La forza del destino for Opera Holland Park. Highlights of her 2010-2011 schedule include HOSTESS / ABBESS in Prokofiev's The Fiery Angel for De Zaterdag Matinee (broadcast live from Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam), the roles of SNAIL and PIGEON in Opera North’s revival of Jonathan Dove’s Pinicchio, DAME MARTHE Faust for The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and AKSINYA in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for Teatro Real Madrid, a role with which she made her 2007 debut at Teatro alla Scala and her Opéra national de Paris debut in 2008.
Following an initial career teaching French, she became a Fellow of Trinity College London and Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music, deciding to make her operatic debut in 1995 in Glyndebourne Opera’s production of Tchaikovsky's Pivokaja Dama. This brought her to the attention of a wider audience, and prompted invitations to appear with every leading British Opera company - a distinction she enjoys to this day.
She made her Covent Garden debut in 2002 as the MAYOR’S WIFE in Janáček's Jenůfa, returning there to sing HÁTA The Bartered Bride, GOVERNESS Pivokaja Dama and AKSINYA in Richard Jones’ award-winning production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in 2006. Further highlights in the UK include CASSANDRA and HÉCUBE The Trojans for English National Opera, MRS KRAMER in Kurt Weill’s One Touch of Venus, GENEVIÈVE Pelléas et Mélisande and HERODIAS Salome for Opera North, PRINCESS in Tchaikovsky's The Enchantress for Grange Park Opera, COUNTESS Pivokaja Dama for Opera Holland Park and MADAME RAQUIN in the European première of Picker’s Thérèse Raquin at the Covent Garden Linbury Theatre.
She made her Opéra de Monte-Carlo debut in 2005 as DAME MARTHE in Gounod’s Faust, alongside Angela Gheorgiu, returning in 2007 to sing MRS NOLAN in Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Medium, and also accepting an invitation by the family to sing at the composer’s funeral.
Further that year, she made her debut for the Macedonian Opera as AMNERIS Aida, going on to appear as AKSINYA Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for De Nederlandse Opera in addition to MARCELLINA Le nozze di Figaro for Opéra National de Montpellier.
On the concert platform her performances have included RAGONDE Le Comte Ory, MISS BENTSON in Lakmé and MADELON in Andrea Chenier for De Zaterdag Matinée at Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. She joined an all-star cast as 3te MAGD in ELEKTRA (which included Dame Gwyneth Jones), and Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, conducted by Edo de Waart, and as one of Britain’s most sought-after soloists she makes regular appearances with the Halifax Choral Society (with whom she has also recorded Handel’s Messiah), the Huddersfield Choral Society, Royal Philharmonic Chorus, Norwich Festival Chorus and City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus. Her discography, in addition to Handel’s Messiah with the Black Dyke Band and Halifax Choral Society also includes the Grammy award-winning Jenůfa, for Covent Garden.
Most recently, she has made welcome returns to De Nederlandse Opera, as HOSTESS Boris Godunov, in addition to CURRA in La Forza del destino for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, MOTHER GOOSE The Rake’s Progress for Theater an der Wien, and a hugely-popular appearance as AUNTIE Peter Grimes for Grand Théâtre de Genève.
