One of Italy’s leading Baritones, Piero Terranova’s recent successes have included PAOLO Simon Boccanegra for the Deutsche Oper Berlin (conducted by Renato Palumbo), the title role in Nabucco for Teatro alla Fenice, and the role of CECIL Maria Stuarda (alongside Mariella Devìa in the title-role) for both the Teatro alla Scala di Milano and the Teatro Bellini di Catania. Future engagements over the coming months include a return to Catania as BELCORE l’Elisir d’amore and VINCENZO GELLNER La Wally for the Zaterdag Matinée at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, conducted by Giuliano Carella in 2010.

He first rose to prominence as a finalist of the Plácido Domingo Operalia Concours, making his debut in 1994 at Teatro Valli Reggio Emilia as DAVID in L’amico Fritz, conducted by Stefano Ranzani. He went on to appear with the Teatri del Circuito Lombardo, in roles including Rigoletto, Così fan tutte, Gluck’s L'ile de Merlin, Falstaff and Le nozze di Figaro. He made his Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma debut during this period as MALATESTA in Don Pasquale, and followed this with PETER in Hänsel und Gretel. In 1998 he enjoyed particular success in the title role of Gianni Schicchi, and Malipiero’s Tre commedie goldoniane the Teatro Sociale di Como, which led to his debut at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, as BELCORE l’Elisir d’amore, conducted by Roberto Rizzi-Brignoli. Further highly-acclaimed appearances at La Scala have included MARCELLO and SCHAUNARD La Bohème, Ariadne auf Naxos (conducted by Sinopoli), Un ballo in maschera, GAZELLA Lucrezia Borgia for La Scala (directed by Hugo de Ana and conducted by Renato Palumbo), LA ROCCA Un giorno di regno, FILIPPO Beatrice di Tenda (at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi, conducted by Palumbo), La Traviata, Dialogues des Carmélites (conducted by Riccardo Muti) and TAGLIAFERRO in Piccini’s La Cecchina (subsequently issued on the Bongiovanni label).
Other international highlights have included PING Turandot at the Megaron Athens (conducted by Renzetti), DON SEBASTIANO in Donizetti’s La Zingara for the Festival della Valle d'Itria (resulting in the first ever recording of the work by Dynamic), GERMONT La Traviata for the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the title-role in Rigoletto for Opera Giocosa di Savona, BLANCSAC Scala di seta (alongside Rockwell Blake) at the Teatro Malibran Venice in 2002, the title role in Nabucco for Teatro alla Fenice, BRETIGNY in Massenet’s Manon for Trieste and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples (conducted by Daniel Oren) and a return to Savona for the title-role in Don Giovanni.
More recent successes have included SHARPLESS Madama Butterfly for both the Teatro alla Fenice and Teatro Verdi Padova, PAOLO Simon Boccanegra for Teatro Regio di Torino (directed by Graham Vick and conducted by Roberto Abbado), SONORA La fanciulla del West (directed by Giancarlo Del Monaco, and in 2006 the role of FRANCESCO FOSCARI I due Foscari in Piacenza (alternating with Renato Bruson). Most recently he sang Puccini’s Messa di Gloria at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and appeared as SILVIO I Pagliacci and MESSAGERO Oedipus Rex in Torino, BRETIGNY in Massenet’s Manon at Teatro Massimo di Palermo and EGISTO in Vittorio Gnecchi’s Cassandra for the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in the first staged production ever of the opera.
