Kathleen Wilkinson Mezzo Soprano

Kathleen Wilkinson is one of the UKs most popular artists, much in demand both in the arena of opera, as well as for her concert and recital engagements. Highlights of her 2009 schedule included the role of BRIGITTA in the British première of Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, as well as ERDA Das Rheingold at the Sopot International Wagner Festival, Poland. Future engagements include MISTRESS QUICKLY Falstaff for the Glyndebourne Festival and Tour, a Gilbert & Sullivan Gala with Donald Maxwell and, on the concert platform, The Dream of Gerontius at Manchester Cathedral.

Kathleen studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, and graduated winning the prestigious Webster Booth Award and Peter Moores’ Foundation Scholarships. Highlights of her many appearances throughout the UK and beyond have included FILIPYEVNA Eugene Onegin for both Glyndebourne and Welsh National Opera, SHE-ANCIENT in Tippett’s Midsummer Marriage (conducted by the late Richard Hickox) at Covent Garden, MOTHER GOOSE The Rake’s Progress (conducted by Thomas Adès), 3te MAGD Elektra for Glyndebourne Festival (conducted by Sir Mark Elder), PASTUCHYNA Jenufa, GENEVIÈVE Pelléas and Mélisande and MRS HERRING Albert Herring for Glyndebourne on Tour.

Elsewhere, her appearances for English National Opera have included MAMMA LUCIA Cavalleria Rusticana, CLREANING LADY The Macropulos Case (conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras), and PASTUCHYNA in Jenufa.

For Scottish Opera she created the roles of MARGARET MUIR in Friend of the People, and MARYLAMB in Monster!. Other roles at Scottish Opera included ERDA, 1st NORN and SCHWERTLEITE in their acclaimed Ring Cycle, NURSE / OLD WOMAN Ines de Castro, and covered the roles AMNERIS Aida, AZUCENA Il Trovatore and ADALGISA Norma. She has made guest appearances with Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park, Opera Ireland and at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Highlights of her more significant European appearances have included NURSE/OLD WOMAN Ines de Castro at the Teatro Coliseo, Porto, BURYA Jenufa for Opéra de Lyon, in addition to concert appearances at the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago, France and Poland. She has also made 6 recordings of complete operas for the BBC, and recorded for the CHANDOS “Opera in English” label including Janacek’s Katya Kabanova and The Macropulos Case.
